The Saturday and Sunday after it are days one and two, and a holiday inside the fortnight is counted like any other day. Your last qualifying day is the Friday two weeks on.
- The benefit comes from your own policy, not the other driver's, even if the other driver was entirely to blame. PIP reimburses 80% of reasonable and necessary medical care and replaces 60% of lost earnings, and $10,000 is the ceiling for the two together. - Which professional you see first changes how much of the $10,000 you can reach. Licensed chiropractic physicians are on the statute's list of providers whose initial care counts toward the 14 days. They are not on the shorter list of people allowed to decide that you had an emergency medical condition: medical doctors, osteopathic physicians, dentists, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses. Without that finding, $2,500 is as far as the medical benefit goes. Retired, with no wages to lose?
In the 2020 census more than half of all Shores residents, 56.0%, were at least 65. For a retiree the wage-replacement half of PIP may be irrelevant, but the medical half is not, and neither is its deadline. Subsection (4) of the same statute says PIP benefits are primary and names only workers' compensation as a credit against them. Having Medicare does not move your auto insurer out of first place for the crash care PIP covers.

Which roads carry Daytona Beach Shores traffic?
Between the ocean and the river there is room for very few through roads, so the whole city leans on four of them. Route numbers here are taken from OpenStreetMap routing and Florida's state road records. This page quotes no crash statistics for the Shores; no official count for these roads was found.
SR A1A, South Atlantic Avenue
The city's spine and the road its hotels and oceanfront condominiums sit along. Northbound it runs into Daytona Beach and on to US 92, International Speedway Boulevard. Turning traffic at condominium and hotel driveways shares the road with through traffic, and a slow rear-end bump behind a car waiting to turn is easy to shrug off. SR A1A, Dunlawton Boulevard and the Port Orange Causeway
At the south end of the city, SR A1A leaves Atlantic Avenue, runs west along Dunlawton Boulevard and crosses the Halifax River on the Port Orange Causeway to US 1. It is the route toward the closest emergency department listed below.
SR 441, South Peninsula Drive
The river-side alternative to A1A. Its southern end is at SR A1A near the causeway on the Daytona Beach Shores and Port Orange line, and it runs about 5.4 miles north to US 92 near the Broadway Bridge in Daytona Beach.
CR 4075, South Atlantic Avenue south
Where SR A1A turns west onto Dunlawton, Atlantic Avenue carries on south as County Road 4075 toward Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Ponce Inlet. The route number changes at that junction; the street name does not.
Then there is the sand. Volusia County allows cars on the beach in designated areas under its own rules: 10 mph, headlights on, at least one front window fully down, and no texting at the wheel. The county's rules single out Frank Rendon Park in Daytona Beach Shores as one of just three beachfront parks where nobody may park in front. The PIP statute speaks of injury arising from the use of a motor vehicle and is silent on whether the ground was paved. Your insurer decides whether a particular collision on the beach is covered, with a Florida attorney involved if that turns into a dispute. The 14 days do not wait for that decision, so be seen while it is pending.

What to know about Daytona Beach Shores if you were hurt here
Daytona Beach Shores is a city of under one square mile on a barrier island, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Halifax River lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, to the west. Daytona Beach borders it to the north; Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Port Orange border it to the south. It was incorporated on April 22, 1960, and a condominium building boom in the 1970s and 1980s gave it its present shape. The city itself says about 90% of residents live in high-rise condominiums along the ocean.
Population is small: 5,179 people at the 2020 census against 4,247 ten years earlier, with a median age of 67.4. Of the 6,329 housing units counted, 52.4% were vacant, which in a resort and retirement community points to many homes being lived in for only part of the year, and to many people on the roads being visitors. A hotel guest from another state who is hurt here should ask their own insurer how their policy responds to a Florida crash, and should still be examined promptly. The 14-day count is worth knowing even before that answer arrives.
The Shores runs its own Department of Public Safety rather than separate police and fire departments. The city says its Public Safety Officers are cross-trained as sworn police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians or paramedics, and are the first to respond to any emergency in the city. Its patrol division lists motor officers and Traffic Homicide Investigation officers among its special assignments. The department's Public Safety Building is at 3050 South Atlantic Avenue.
The same department runs a Vial of Life programme: residents fill in a form listing medical conditions and medications and keep it on the refrigerator for rescue crews. After a crash, a written medication list is just as useful at the first examination, particularly for older drivers who take several medicines. Take it with you.

Which emergency departments serve Daytona Beach Shores?
Dial 911 first if someone could be badly hurt. MedlinePlus names the situations that call for it without delay: heavy bleeding from the head or face, someone who is confused, drowsy or unconscious, someone who has stopped breathing, or any suspicion of a serious head or neck injury. In the Shores, the city says its own Public Safety Officers are first on scene at any emergency.
There is no emergency department with a Shores address among those checked. The three below sit on the mainland, west of the Halifax River, and carry the names their hospital systems use. Each distance is a straight line on OpenStreetMap from the city centre, which says nothing about how long the trip takes.

For the 14-day rule, the first visit does not have to be an emergency room. The statute's list of initial care providers also includes physicians, dentists, licensed chiropractic physicians and advanced practice registered nurses, so a doctor's office or an urgent care centre staffed by them can serve.
