What the 14-day rule means after a South Daytona crash
South Daytona covers about five square miles and shares its northern edge with Daytona Beach. A collision at Beville Road and US 1 happens on the line between South Daytona and Daytona Beach. Whichever city's name ends up on the crash report, the count is the same, because Fla. Stat. 627.736(1)(a) is a state statute. It pays Personal Injury Protection medical benefits only if you receive initial services and care within 14 days after the motor vehicle accident. The days are calendar days, counted from the crash date, and weekends and public holidays are part of them. A crash on the 9th means qualifying care on or before the 23rd.
Your own PIP pays first, whoever caused the crash: 80% of reasonable, medically necessary medical expenses and 60% of lost income, inside a combined $10,000. Three parts of the same subsection decide how much of that you can actually use.
- Who counts as a first visit. The statute lists care from a medical or osteopathic physician, a dentist, a licensed chiropractic physician or an advanced practice registered nurse, and care provided in a hospital. An emergency department, an urgent care centre or a chiropractor can each satisfy the requirement, as long as the visit itself happens inside the 14 days.
- Who can write the finding. The full $10,000 depends on a determination that you had an emergency medical condition. Only a medical doctor, an osteopathic physician, a dentist, a physician assistant or an advanced practice registered nurse can make it. A chiropractor can treat you inside the window but cannot make that finding, and without it the medical benefit stops at $2,500. - What PIP leaves out. The subsection also says PIP medical benefits do not include massage therapy or acupuncture. If a treatment plan after a South Daytona crash leans on either, ask in writing who is paying before the first session.

Which roads carry South Daytona traffic?
Two long north to south roads frame the city, US 1 near the river and Nova Road to the west, and three cross streets tie them together. The road names and route numbers below come from OpenStreetMap and from the route records for each highway. No crash totals are given for any of them, because none was read from an official source for this city.
US 1, South Ridgewood Avenue
The city's main street, running the length of South Daytona on its east side, close to the Halifax River. City Hall is on it, at 1672 S Ridgewood Avenue. Beville Road, Big Tree Road and Reed Canal Road each meet it at a traffic signal, according to OpenStreetMap, and the routes used on this page from Daytona Beach and from Port Orange both spend most of their distance on it.
SR 5A, South Nova Road
The western spine. Nova Road comes north out of Port Orange with the Halifax Canal beside it, open along the median in places. Inside South Daytona it meets Reed Canal Road, Big Tree Road and then Beville Road, and just past Beville Road it enters Daytona Beach. The entrance to Reed Canal Park is off this stretch.
SR 400, Beville Road
The eastern tail of State Road 400, which runs unsigned alongside I-4 until the interstate ends at I-95. Past I-95 it becomes Beville Road and runs about 4.2 miles east, crossing Clyde Morris Boulevard and Nova Road, to end at US 1 on the city line between Daytona Beach and South Daytona. It is the link between the interstate and the north end of the city.
Big Tree Road
The cross street through the middle of South Daytona, between US 1 and Nova Road. The city's Public Works Department is at 504 Big Tree Road and Votran, the county bus system, has its office at 950 Big Tree Road.
Reed Canal Road
The southern cross street, running from US 1 near the river west to Nova Road, past Reed Canal Park.
The railway matters here too. The Florida East Coast Railway runs north to south through South Daytona roughly a quarter of a mile west of US 1, and OpenStreetMap shows it crossing Beville Road, Big Tree Road and Reed Canal Road at street level. A train holding traffic at a crossing, a short way from a signal on US 1, produces the sort of stopped queue where low-speed rear-end impacts happen. Whatever the road, write down the street, the nearest cross street, your direction of travel and the report number while they are fresh. An insurer will ask, and a crash near the Beville Road line or the Port Orange line is easy to misplace later.
South Daytona, and what its layout means after a crash
South Daytona is a city in Volusia County on the west bank of the Halifax River, just south of Daytona Beach and north of Port Orange. Across the water, on the barrier island, is Daytona Beach Shores. The 2020 census counted 12,865 residents, up from 12,252 in 2010. The city's total area is about 5.05 square miles, and 1.35 square miles of that is water. The routing service used for this page sends a driver from Daytona Beach Shores south along SR A1A and over the Dunlawton Avenue causeway in Port Orange before turning north on US 1 into South Daytona. The quickest road link that service found between the two runs through Port Orange, which is worth knowing if you are hurt on the beachside and heading home or to care on the mainland.
The tracks are older than the city's name. The settlement was a town called Blake, which opened its post office on August 19, 1878. After the railroad reached Daytona around 1886, a station was built at Big Tree Crossing, and the name lives on in Big Tree Road, which still crosses the tracks. Daytona Beach annexed Blake after the 1926 consolidation of Daytona, Daytona Beach and Seabreeze; residents broke away around 1938 to form the town of South Daytona, which became a city in 1951.
Many households here are one person. The 2020 census counted 5,914 households, and 33.0% of them were someone living alone; in 15.6% of households that person was 65 or older. The median age was 48.7. None of that changes the statute. If you live alone and your car is out of action after the crash, arrange the ride to an examination early in the 14-day window, not on day 13, and tell someone the crash date so it is written down somewhere other than your memory.
The city has its own Public Safety Department, covering police and fire. The South Daytona Police Department also runs a volunteer Citizens Patrol whose members help regulate traffic around accident scenes. Whoever attends your crash, ask for the report number before you leave. Which emergency departments are closest to South Daytona?
If anyone may be seriously hurt, call 911 first and let the dispatcher decide where the ambulance goes. None of the emergency departments on Halifax Health's emergency services page, and neither of the AdventHealth emergency rooms below, has a South Daytona address. These are the nearest, named the way each hospital system names them, with straight-line distances from the city centre on OpenStreetMap. Those are map distances, not travel estimates.
Halifax Health - Emergency Department of Port Orange
1041 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange, about 2.8 miles away. Halifax Health says it gives the greater Southeast Volusia County 24-hour emergency care, and describes it as a 20-bed, full-service department at its Port Orange medical center and a designated Primary Stroke Center.
Halifax Health - Emergency Department of Daytona Beach
303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach, about 3.9 miles away and open 24/7. Halifax Health states that it runs the area's only Level II Trauma Center and is an Acute Care Facility for Florida's Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program.
AdventHealth Port Orange ER
5811 South Williamson Blvd, Port Orange, about 4.5 miles away. AdventHealth describes it as a freestanding emergency room open 24/7. When it opened in 2021, AdventHealth said it is part of AdventHealth Daytona Beach, is not an urgent care center, and bills at hospital emergency department rates.

301 Memorial Medical Parkway, Daytona Beach, about 8.2 miles away, west of I-95. AdventHealth lists emergency room care there seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
When a neck or back injury is a 911 call
MedlinePlus lists signs of a possible spinal cord injury that include numbness or tingling spreading down an arm or leg, weakness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, and a stiff neck, headache or neck pain. It says to call 911 if you think someone has a spinal cord injury and not to move the person unless there is urgent danger.
For injuries that need prompt attention but not an emergency room, two urgent care clinics sit close to the city. Neither is an emergency department. Halifax Health lists ExpressCare Daytona Beach Shores at 3048 South Atlantic Ave., across the river, and AdventHealth lists Centra Care Port Orange at 1208 Dunlawton Avenue. Urgent care is generally staffed by physicians, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses, so a visit there usually satisfies the 14 days and can produce the emergency medical condition finding.
Wherever you go, tell the staff the visit is because of a motor vehicle crash and give the date, so your record ties the symptoms to the collision. Facilities open, close and change their services; this list was checked on September 23, 2026.

Not for PIP. Fla. Stat. 627.736 applies across Florida, so it does not matter whether the report says South Daytona or Daytona Beach. You have 14 calendar days from the crash date to receive qualifying care, weekends and holidays included, and the visit itself has to fall inside that window.
Will PIP pay for massage after a South Daytona crash?
No. Fla. Stat. 627.736(1)(a) says PIP medical benefits do not include massage therapy or acupuncture. Other services from a qualifying provider can be covered at 80%, within the limits. If a care plan includes massage, ask who is paying for it before you start.
