What the 14-day rule means after an Edgewater crash
Florida's PIP statute, Fla. Stat. 627.736, reads the same in Edgewater as in DeLand or Daytona Beach. Medical benefits are paid only if you receive initial services and care within 14 days after the crash. The days are calendar days counted from the crash date, so a collision on Indian River Boulevard on the 8th needs qualifying care on or before the 22nd. A booking made inside the window for a visit outside it does not count, and the clock does not wait for pain to show up. The 14-day deadline page works out your last day from the crash date.

Two parts of the statute matter more in Edgewater than the general rule suggests.
- The ambulance crew. None of the emergency departments that AdventHealth and Halifax Health list has an Edgewater address, so a serious crash here can mean an ambulance ride out of the city. Fla. Stat. 627.736(1)(a) says initial services and care may also be provided by a person or entity licensed under part III of chapter 401, the medical transportation services part of Florida law, that provides emergency transportation and treatment. That does not settle your ceiling. The finding of an emergency medical condition, which lifts the medical benefit from $2,500 to $10,000, can only come from a medical doctor, an osteopathic physician, a dentist, a physician assistant or an advanced practice registered nurse. Paramedics are not on that list, and neither are chiropractic physicians. Ask your insurer how an ambulance run was recorded, and get examined inside the 14 days regardless.
- Crashes during work. The city describes a manufacturing base here, with boat builders and the ParkTowne Industrial Center, so some Edgewater crashes happen on the clock. Under 627.736(4), PIP is primary, except that benefits received under a workers' compensation law are credited against it. If you were hurt on the clock, report the crash to your employer as well as your insurer and ask each one how the claim will be handled. The 14-day count keeps running while they work it out.

US 1, Ridgewood Avenue
The main north to south road through the city. The routing data names it Ridgewood Avenue in Edgewater, North Dixie Freeway on the way north into New Smyrna Beach, and South Ridgewood Avenue and then North US Highway 1 heading south toward Oak Hill. Both of those neighbouring trips run almost entirely on US 1.
SR 442, Indian River Boulevard
The city's link to the interstate, and the whole state road lies inside Edgewater. The router measures about 6.0 km on Indian River Boulevard between exit 244 and US 1. The western stretch is a rural divided highway that passes under a pedestrian bridge for the East Central Regional Rail Trail and meets Old Mission Road. Nearer town it runs through homes, crosses a railroad and ends at a signal on US 1, close to the Edgewater Public Library.

OpenStreetMap places motorway junction 244 inside Edgewater, where I-95 meets SR 442. It is about 3.9 miles in a straight line southwest of the city centre, and the ramps feed straight onto Indian River Boulevard. Farther north, exit 249 meets SR 44 in New Smyrna Beach.
Park Avenue and Old Mission Road
Another east to west route across the city. In the routing data, trips from Glencoe come down South Glencoe Road and South Taylor Road to Old Mission Road, then follow West Park Avenue for about 3.7 km and East Park Avenue to Riverside Drive. The routing data shows no route number for either road.
Riverside Drive
The riverfront street, where the city lists its own address at 104 North Riverside. The city's Riverwalk winds along the Intracoastal Waterway and is promoted for walking, jogging and biking, so people on foot and on bicycles use the riverfront too.
That last point matters for PIP. The statute covers people struck by a motor vehicle while not an occupant of a self-propelled vehicle, which takes in someone on a bicycle on the Riverwalk or at a Rail Trail crossing as well as someone on foot. If you own a car, your own policy is normally the one that answers. The 14 days run from the crash date either way.
If a rider or pedestrian is down and may have hurt their neck or back, MedlinePlus says not to move them unless it is absolutely necessary, to keep the head and neck in the position they were found, and to call 911. Signs it lists for a spinal cord injury include numbness or tingling spreading down an arm or leg, weakness, trouble walking, a head held in an unusual position, and a stiff neck, headache or neck pain. Edgewater's layout, and what it means after a crash
Edgewater is a city in southeast Volusia County on the Indian River North, next to the Mosquito Lagoon. Census Bureau boundary files put New Smyrna Beach on its northern edge, Oak Hill to the south and the unincorporated Glencoe area to the west. The city has about 25 square miles of land and 0.4 square miles of water, and it runs parallel to the river. The city centre sits near the water, by Riverside Drive and US 1, while the city limits reach west past I-95. For someone hurt out by the interchange, the riverfront neighbourhoods and the nearest hospital are both several miles away.
The settlement was started by John Milton Hawks, and the city says Hawks Park was founded in 1871. It was incorporated as the Town of Hawks Park in 1915 and kept that name until 1924, when the Florida Legislature renamed it Edgewater. The 2020 census counted 23,097 residents, up from 20,750 in 2010, and the city's own figure for 2024 is 24,981. The city gives a median age of 54 for 2020, citing Census Bureau QuickFacts. Age changes nothing about the deadline. A retired driver hurt on Ridgewood Avenue has the same 14 calendar days to be examined as anyone else, and the medical part of PIP applies in full even when there are no wages to replace.
The city reports that its fire and rescue service answered 4,556 calls in 2022 and its police 27,346. Those are city-wide totals for every kind of call, not crash counts, but they show who is likely to reach a crash first. Tell the responders if anything hurts, even slightly, so the report records it. Get the report number before you leave the scene.
Edgewater also works as an industrial town. The city names Boston Whaler, EdgeWater Power Boats, Everglades and SŌLACE Boats among the boat builders based here, and says the ParkTowne Industrial Center sits in one of the largest contiguous industrially zoned areas in Volusia County, next to an airport with a residential fly-in community. One Edgewater listing is easy to misread. Halifax Health's Hospice Care Center at 4140 South Ridgewood Avenue in Edgewater offers round-the-clock care to its own patients, but it is a hospice for patients and families, not an emergency department. Do not go there after a crash.
Call 911 instead of driving yourself if
- someone may have hurt their neck or back and has numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg
- someone cannot walk, or their head is held in an unusual position
- someone is pale, clammy or dazed, or is not fully alert
- someone loses control of their bladder or bowel

How long do I have to bring an injury claim after an Edgewater crash?
