- Qualifying care means an examination that actually takes place inside the window: a hospital emergency department, an urgent care centre, a physician, a dentist or a licensed chiropractic physician. The finding that sets your ceiling
Meeting the 14 days keeps you eligible. Reaching the full $10,000 also takes a determination that you had an emergency medical condition, and the statute lets only a medical doctor, an osteopathic physician, a dentist, a physician assistant or an advanced practice registered nurse make it. A licensed chiropractic physician can provide qualifying initial care but cannot make that determination. Without it on file, the benefit is capped at $2,500. I-95
The interstate runs north to south on the west side of the city, with two interchanges inside Ormond Beach: Exit 268 at SR 40 (Granada Boulevard) and Exit 273 at US 1. Crashes on the interstate happen at interstate speed, and the two exits feed straight onto Granada Boulevard and US 1.
SR 40, Granada Boulevard
The city's east to west spine. It runs from the I-95 interchange through the commercial stretch on the mainland, crosses the Halifax River on the Granada Bridge and meets A1A on the beachside. The historic shopping district sits along Granada between A1A and Orchard Street, where through traffic mixes with parking, turns and people on foot.
US 1, Ridgewood Avenue
The main local north to south road. It enters the city from Holly Hill at the southern line and leaves to the north just past the I-95 interchange. Inside the city OpenStreetMap labels part of it South Yonge Street, and it carries almost the whole trip from Holly Hill or Daytona Beach into central Ormond Beach.
SR A1A and Nova Road
A1A is North Atlantic Avenue on the beachside, continuing north as Ocean Shore Boulevard toward Ormond-by-the-Sea. Nova Road, SR 5A, is the inland alternate to US 1 on the mainland.
Driving on the beach is still permitted on some stretches of sand here, as it was in the racing years. The 14-day count in Fla. Stat. 627.736 runs from the date of the motor vehicle accident, and the statute's wording on that deadline says nothing about where the accident happened.
Wherever it was, write down the road, the nearest cross street, the direction you were travelling and the crash report number while you still remember them. Your insurer will ask, and a vague location is one more thing an adjuster can question later. Low-speed collisions still injure people, and a crash that looked minor on Granada Boulevard can produce pain that appears a day or two later.
Ormond Beach geography, and why it matters after a crash
Ormond Beach is a city in Volusia County directly north of Daytona Beach, with Holly Hill along its southern edge on the mainland and Ormond-by-the-Sea to the north. The 2020 census counted 43,080 residents, up from 38,137 in 2010. The city sits on the Halifax River lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, so it comes in two parts: the beachside between the river and the ocean, and the mainland to the west, where US 1, Nova Road and both I-95 interchanges are. The Granada Bridge carries SR 40 over the river between the two. The first bridge across the Halifax River here was built in 1887.
That split has a practical side for anyone hurt in a crash. Every emergency department listed below is on the mainland, south and west of the city centre, so a crash on the beachside usually means a trip across the Halifax River to reach one. When you are deciding whether you can get yourself there, count that crossing in. If you cannot, or you are unsure, call 911.
Many residents are older. At the 2020 census the median age in Ormond Beach was 53.9 and 32.0% of residents were 65 or older. The 14-day rule has no exception for age or for being retired. If you have no wages, the lost-income part of PIP may not matter to you, but the medical part and its deadline apply in full.
The area has been called the Birthplace of Speed since the early 1900s. From 1902, some of the first automobile races ran on the packed sand from Ormond south to Daytona Beach, and in 1907 Glenn Curtiss set an unofficial world record here on a V-8 motorcycle. Feeling fine at the scene tells you very little. Adrenaline masks pain, and soft tissue injuries commonly appear 24 to 72 hours later. The 14-day clock runs from the crash date, so waiting to see how you feel is how people lose the benefit. The statute has no exception for minor crashes.
How long do I have to file an injury claim after a Volusia County crash?
